Our Veterinarians

Pam Kloepfer, DVM

Dr. Pam Kloepfer grew up in Cincinnati. She moved to Columbus, Ohio, and received her undergraduate degree and veterinary degree from The Ohio State University. She then moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to complete a one-year small animal rotating internship at Louisiana State University. She then moved back to Columbus and worked as an emergency veterinarian for 9 years before moving back to Cincinnati. While working in emergency practice, she encountered many pet owners whose pets had serious life ending diseases or trauma and discussed pet euthanasia quite a lot. She realized the emergency room is a very stressful environment for both owners and their pets, to have to consider euthanasia. She ultimately decided that in home euthanasia was the best fit for her to be able to provide more passionate care for both pets and owners during this difficult process.

In Home Euthanasia: Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you’re wondering if it’s time, exploring end-of-life options, or ready to schedule an appointment, our Cincinnati team is here to help. Below, you’ll find clear answers about in-home euthanasia, what to expect during the visit, and how aftercare works.

Understanding In-Home Euthanasia

Before making decisions about end-of-life care, understanding the fundamentals of home euthanasia services helps pet families feel informed and confident in their choices.

What is in-home euthanasia?

In-home euthanasia is a gentle, veterinarian-administered service that brings a peaceful passing for your pet directly to your home, eliminating the stress of a car ride and clinic environment during your pet’s last moments. Unlike clinic-based euthanasia, this approach allows your dog, cat, or other pet to remain in familiar surroundings throughout the process.

The key difference is comfort - both for your pet and your family. Most pets feel relaxed in their own space, free from the anxiety of car rides, unfamiliar smells, and clinical environments. Family members can take their time saying goodbye without the constraints of a veterinary office schedule.

How does in-home euthanasia work?

The in-home euthanasia process mirrors the same medical techniques used in veterinary clinics, performed by experienced veterinarians who specialize in end-of-life care. The veterinarian arrives with all necessary medications and equipment, then guides your family through each step with compassionate care.

The process typically includes a sedation injection to help your pet feel relaxed and comfortable, followed by the final injection that allows them to pass peacefully. Throughout the process, our veterinarian works to ensure your pet’s last moments are dignified, painless, and surrounded by love.

Is in-home euthanasia legal and safe?

Yes. Licensed veterinarians follow applicable state and federal requirements for transporting and administering medications, as well as professional standards for humane euthanasia.

When to Consider In-Home Euthanasia

One of the most difficult decisions pet owners face is determining the right time. Understanding the signs and having professional support can help during this difficult time.

What conditions warrant consideration of euthanasia?

Terminal illnesses are a common reason families consider euthanasia. These include advanced cancer, organ failure (kidney, liver, heart), end-stage heart disease, and irreversible neurological conditions.

Pets experiencing cognitive decline, including dementia, may not be in obvious physical pain, but their quality of life can still be significantly affected. They may stop enjoying favorite activities, become confused or withdrawn, or experience anxiety, especially at night, that makes daily life uncomfortable or distressing.

Chronic pain and mobility issues, such as severe arthritis, hip dysplasia, or spinal disease may also warrant consideration when pain management no longer provides relief or when your pet can no longer perform basic functions.

How do I know when it’s time?

Evaluating your pet’s quality of life involves monitoring several key indicators. Veterinary professionals often use quality of life scales that assess factors including pain levels, appetite, hydration, mobility, and whether your pet experiences more good days than bad days.

Physical and behavioral signs to watch include:

  • Loss of appetite or refusal to eat for multiple days
  • Inability to stand, walk, or find comfortable resting positions
  • Persistent pain that is unresponsive to pain medication
  • Difficulty breathing or chronic respiratory distress
  • Loss of interest in favorite activities or family interaction
  • Incontinence or inability to maintain hygiene

A quality-of-life consultation with a veterinarian can provide objective assessment and offer guidance through this difficult decision. Many families find that tracking their pet’s condition over days or weeks helps identify declining trends that may not be obvious day-to-day.

Can I schedule a quality-of-life consultation first?

Absolutely. We offer quality of life assessments to help you evaluate your pet’s condition before making a final decision. These consultations can occur in-home or via tele-advice, giving you professional guidance without immediate pressure. Please be advised that medications cannot be prescribed during these appointments.

The In-Home Euthanasia Process

Understanding exactly what happens, from scheduling to completion, helps families prepare emotionally and practically for their pet’s passing.

How do I schedule an appointment?

You can book directly through our website or call us and speak to a Care Coordinator. Appointments are typically available within a few days, though same-day or next-day scheduling may be available. There may be after-hours and weekend availability.

What happens during the home visit?

The veterinarian arrives at your home and begins with a conversation, meeting your family, assessing your pet’s current state, and confirming your wishes. This is a time to ask questions, express concerns, and ensure everyone understands what to expect.

The doctor will then administer an appropriate level of sedation to let them sleep and ease their pain or discomfort. This typically takes 5-15 minutes to take full effect, during which time your pet becomes drowsy and relaxed. Many families use this time for final moments together - holding, petting, and saying goodbye.

After your pet is resting peacefully, a simple injectable euthanasia solution will be given, and your pet will gently drift into their peaceful transition. The euthanasia solution causes unconsciousness almost immediately, followed by peaceful cessation of breathing and heartbeat. Your pet simply drifts into a deep sleep and does not wake.

What should I expect medically?

You may observe some physical signs after passing, including relaxation of muscles, eyes remaining open, or occasional muscle twitches. These are reflexive responses and occur after consciousness has ended; your pet experiences no pain or awareness during this time.

How long does the process take?

Most home visits last 30-60 minutes from arrival to departure. This includes the initial consultation, sedation time, the euthanasia procedure itself, and time for your family to spend with your pet afterward.

The actual passing is quick - usually seconds to a few minutes from final injection to the pet’s passing. However, our veterinarians provide flexibility for families to take the time they need. There’s no rush to say goodbye, gather family members, or process emotions before and after.

Common Concerns

Many pet families often have similar worries about the process. Addressing these concerns directly helps reduce anxiety during an already difficult situation.

Will my pet experience pain or distress?

Veterinary guidelines confirm that properly conducted euthanasia is the most humane option compared to allowing natural death from illness. The sedation injection ensures your pet is relaxed, comfortable, and already in a deep sleep before the final injection is administered. Any physical responses observed (muscle twitches, agonal breathing) occur after unconsciousness and are reflexive, not indicative of pain or awareness.

Can other pets and family members be present?

Yes. Many families choose to include children and other pets in the process. The veterinarian can provide guidance on age-appropriate involvement for children and recommendations for whether other pets should be present. Allowing other pets to see or smell their companion after passing helps them understand the loss.

What if I become too emotional during the procedure?

Emotions are expected and welcomed. Our veterinarians are experienced in supporting grieving families and provide compassionate support throughout the process.

If you feel you need to step away at any point - during sedation or the final injection - that’s completely acceptable. Some family members prefer to hold their pet throughout, while others choose to step out and return after passing. The veterinarian will accommodate your needs and ensure your pet is never alone.

How do I prepare my home for the visit?

Preparation is minimal. Choose a comfortable, familiar space in your home where your pet feels most at peace - their favorite bed, a sunny spot on the floor, or the couch where they love to rest.

Aftercare and Memorial Options

After your pet’s passing, Home With Dignity coordinates respectful aftercare services and offers meaningful ways to honor your pet’s life.

What aftercare options are available?

Pet cremation is the most common aftercare choice. Options include:

  • Private cremation: Your pet is cremated alone, and all of your pet’s ashes are returned to you in an urn of your choosing
  • Communal cremation: Multiple pets are cremated together, with ashes scattered respectfully at a memorial site (ashes not returned)

Home burial is also an option where legally permitted.

How is my pet transported after euthanasia?

Following the procedure, your pet is handled with dignity and respect. The Home With Dignity team provides transportation to a partner cremation facility.

Depending on your preferences, you may choose to spend additional time with your pet after passing before transport, or you may prefer the team handles this promptly.

Do you provide grief support resources?

Yes. We recognize that the grieving process continues long after the appointment ends. You are always welcome to reach out to us to talk or share memories about your beloved pet. We can also provide resources for outside grief support.
