How does our in home euthanasia process work?

1. When our doctor arrives

The doctor will get to know you and your pet, perform a short assessment of your pet's health, and answer any questions you may have surrounding in home euthanasia. The process can take place indoors or outdoors, wherever your pet is most comfortable.

2. When you are ready & your pet is resting peacefully

The doctor will administer an appropriate level of sedation to let them sleep and ease their pain or discomfort.

After your pet is resting peacefully, a simple injectable euthanasia solution will be given and your pet will gently drift into their peaceful transition.

3. After your pet has peacefully crossed the rainbow bridge

You and your family will be given privacy to say your final goodbyes - this is not rushed, and you can take as much time as you need. When you are ready, the doctor will come in and speak with you about the aftercare of your pet.

4. If we are handling the aftercare

After you have said your goodbyes, if we are handling the aftercare, the doctor will come in with either a blanket or stretcher to place your pet in their vehicle to transport them to the crematorium. They will go through the process with you and provide you with information on how and when your pet's ashes will be ready to come home.

Our Veterinarians

Siomara Acevedo, DVM

Dr. Siomara Acevedo was born and raised in Puerto Rico before landing in Atlanta, Georgia. She was a toddler/in diapers when she started learning about animals at her grandparents’ small farm. She really enjoyed bottle feeding baby goats from the moment she learned how to walk. Her grandparents truly instilled kindness towards animals by taking injured stray dogs to the vet then nursing them back to health at their home.

Dr. Sio’s calling for veterinary medicine came at such a young age that she started shadowing at a local veterinary hospital when she was just 11 years old. As a teenager, she also volunteered at the Puerto Rico Zoo, where she learned about wildlife medicine and protecting endangered species. In addition, she occasionally helped rescue stranded marine mammals such as manatees along with the Caribbean Stranding Network (Red Caribeña de Varamientos).

In 2001 she moved to Athens, Georgia to pursue a degree in animal and dairy science at the University of Georgia. She also gained entrance to the same institution’s College of Veterinary Medicine and completed her doctorate in 2009.

During college and to help support her studies, Dr. Sio obtained a National Animal Control Association (NACA) certification and worked as an Animal Control Officer for Athens-Clarke County. Despite witnessing animal cruelty, Dr. Sio enjoyed educating the community on proper animal care, prosecuting animal abusers and finding loving homes for many abandoned pets.

Once a newly minted veterinarian, Dr. Sio then focused on small and large emergency veterinary medicine in northeast Georgia. As a mixed animal emergency veterinarian, she performed countless emergency surgeries and provided care for a wide array of animals including camels and reptiles. After her first 4 years as a veterinarian, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she continued to expand her knowledge in small animal emergency medicine and critical care.

Dr. Sio says: “There is no greater feeling in the world than successfully treating a severely injured animal in the brink of death and returning it to an owner who surely though they would lose their pet after a scary emergency”.

Emergency medicine taught her far more than deep science and resuscitation skills, but mostly how to remain calm, compassionate and focused in the most stressful situations. Some of those instances involved heart breaking pet euthanasia. It was imperative to Dr. Sio to deliver the most comfortable transition for pets and their owners even in the busiest moments at the animal ER.

After almost 10 years of practicing emergency medicine and critical care, Dr. Sio became a relief veterinarian where she could use her experience to seamlessly fill in for other veterinarians at different veterinary clinics. She also worked as a shelter veterinarian and high volume spay and neuter surgeon.

After saying goodbye to her own 18-year-old rescue dog and seeing how busy many veterinary clinics struggle to provide a peaceful euthanasia, Dr. Sio’s interest in delivering the most comfortable euthanasia experience possible grew and she decided to join our at home euthanasia practice, Home with Dignity. She could not pass up the opportunity to provide the in home euthanasia service to her community in Atlanta to whom she cares so much.

She truly believes that it takes a very experienced veterinarian to confidently translate to grieving pet owners how a pet is feeling as their health declines as well as the long-term implications/ ramifications of their ailments. Utilizing her experience to educate and comfort pet parents during emotional times helps them say goodbye without any guilt. It is truly an honorable duty not only to peacefully release a pet from their suffering, but also to help their guardians begin their healing process in a healthy manner. She tries her hardest to make sure the last difficult weeks or days with a beloved pet do not overshadow the happy times shared throughout years together. Dr. Sio has a true passion for end of life care and is happy to help clients that have to make those tough decisions. We are honored to have her as a part of our unique mobile euthanasia practice and to allow her to provide this unique at home euthanasia service in Atlanta. She is prepared to help you and your family during this time and guide you through the euthanasia process.

Outside of work, Dr. Sio is extremely passionate about nutrition, fitness, and mental health. She loves helping others with their health journey and hopes to become a life coach in the future. She has one small dog, Monkey, who is the boss of the household. She also enjoys spending time outside, reading, road trips, and weekend farmers markets. Aside from her family back in Puerto Rico, Dr. Sio also spends time with her new Atlanta family who enjoy a very competitive game of Mexican Dominoes as much as she does.
